The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Madhya Pradesh government on the suspicious death of 33-year-old model and actress Twisha Sharma at her home in Bhopal.

Taking suo motu cognisance of reports regarding Ms. Sharma’s death within five months of her marriage, the NCW sought an ATR within seven days.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, asking them to ensure an immediate, fair and time-bound probe into the matter.

“According to media reports, Twisha died under suspicious circumstances just five months after her marriage. The victim’s family has levelled serious allegations against her husband, Samarth, and mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, of dowry harassment, mental, and physical torture,” the Commission said in a statement.

Ms. Sharma was found dead at her marital home in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal on the night of May 12. She was taken to AIIMS, Bhopal where doctors declared her brought dead. The hospital alerted the police.

Police have registered an FIR against her husband, advocate Samarth Singh, and her mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh under charges related to dowry death and harassment.

Both the Sharma and Singh families have traded allegations over what may have led the 33-year-old to take her own life. The model’s family has demanded a second independent post-mortem examination.

Ms Sharma’s husband, Samarth Singh, remains absconding. Police have announced a cash reward of ₹10,000 for information leading to his arrest.

The NCW has sought details regarding the FIR provisions, the status of accused persons’ arrest and interrogation, efforts to arrest the absconding husband, passport impoundment status, CCTV footage, call records, electronic and forensic evidence, post-mortem report and action taken on any prior complaints.

The commission has also directed authorities to ensure protection for the victim’s family from threats, pressure or character assassination.

Negligence or misuse of influence in cases related to dowry harassment and domestic violence against women would not be tolerated, and strict action must be taken against those found guilty, it said.
