The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a programme for the implementation of standardised road lane markings, kerb painting and scientific traffic signage across all 123 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the State.

All ULBs have been instructed to ensure standardised central lane and side-lane markings; edge lines; stop lines and zebra crossings; black-and-yellow kerb painting; mandatory, cautionary and informatory traffic signage; safety improvements around schools, hospitals, junctions and market areas; rectification of minor road defects before execution of marking works.

In the first phase, the ULBs will focus on arterial roads, major junctions, school and hospital approaches, market corridors and other high-density traffic stretches.

Following the directions of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who emphasised that all municipal roads in the State should reflect modern urban mobility standards with visible traffic discipline, Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar issued instructions to the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration (CDMA) and Engineer-in-Chief, Public Health and Municipal Engineering department for implementation of the programme.

The initiative, aimed at reducing traffic confusion, improving pedestrian visibility and ensuring safer urban mobility systems, should adhere with the standards IRC:35, IRC:67 and IRC:SP:118-2018, Mr. Suresh Kumar said.

Mr. Suresh Kumar said geo-tagged ‘before’ and ‘after’ photographs will be captured for every road stretch mandatorily. The implementation progress will be monitored continuously by the government, he added.
